55 DAYS – August 14, 2017

Good morning my friends! We got a little rain yesterday and I mean a little, .01″, but it was enough to stop our record run of the most days without any measurable rain. The old record was 52 days and we smashed it this year.

Of course the bad news is, because we live on an island water is limited. We don’t have any snow pack, rivers, streams or large reservoirs, only well water. So to discourage wasting water on things like washing cars or watering lawns our water bill almost doubles.

You can really tell the people who don’t seem to understand all of this. Here’s what we don’t like to see. Probably just the opposite where you live.

Green Lawn

By contrast here is a beautifully kept lawn here in Coupeville on Whidbey Island. Oh, by the way, it’s mine 🙂

Moving on to this morning’s walk. With an on-shore breeze and a little rain, most of the smoke from the Canadian forest fires has been cleared out but that doesn’t mean our spectacular sunrises are gone.

I timed my walk perfectly this morning to be on the Coupeville Wharf right when the sun was breaking over the horizon, Cascade Mountains and Penn Cove. This first one is my friend “Frank”, the Great Blue Heron, sitting on his favorite lamp post with sailboats in the background.

A few minutes later the sun was up a little more and I captured this photo and I really like it.

And then as the sun rose even more I was able to frame “Frank” in front of the sun making for a nice silhouette.

So that’s it for this Monday. I hope you have a great week ahead and we are able to walk some more as the week goes along. Thanks for stopping by.

ANOTHER SUNRISE – August 4, 2017

I know, too much of a good thing but I just couldn’t resist getting some more sunrise photos with this smokey inversion layer that’s going on.

While I was waiting for the sun to pop up over the Cascade Mountains I walked down to the beach and took the following photos of the pilings that hold up the Coupeville Wharf.

I move over to underneath the ramp that goes out to the wharf and thought this was kind of an interesting photo.

It wasn’t long until the sun peeked above the mountains.

I took a bunch of photos but I came back to this same spot for another one after the sun was up.

And that was that! Now the sun is really up and it’s going to be another scorcher of a day. I’ll really be glad when this hot streak is over and we get our clear skies back.

Have a great weekend and try to say cool.

SUN BIRD – August 3, 2017

Good morning everyone, I hope your day is off to a good start I know mine is. A nice little two mile walk to get the motor going.

We currently have a lot of smoke over the area. There are some forest fires burning in Canada and the smoke is being brought down here by a huge high pressure system. While I’m not crazy about it, it certainly does make for some interesting photos.

Yesterday I captured the sun just as it was rising above the trees across the street from my house. I know it doesn’t look real but there it is!

Sinrise

From this morning I captured a small motorboat racing to the sun, at least that’s what it looks like. It is heading east on Penn Cove toward Saratoga Passage.

Small Boat Red Sunrise

Looking west from the Coupeville Wharf I spotted these two madrona trees that were really showing their red bark in the orange morning sunrise.

Hi Bank Madrona Trees

I stole the title for this blog from my sister who posted a similar picture that she took in California a number of years ago. Her’s was a raven flying across the rising sun, I believe mine is a seagull.

Her’s was better than mine but I still like it.

Have a great day and onward!

BOATS DEER BIRD WATER – August 1, 2017

Welcome to August 2017! It’s my favorite month of the year because it’s the middle of summer and the weather is usually fantastic plus it’s my birth month, a memorable moment indeed.

Get your good walking shoes on because we’re going to walk four miles this morning. First stop Ebey Prairie Reserve. In the golden sunrise this farm really popped out. The Olympic Mountains are in the background with just a wee bit of snow near the top.

Barn and Olympics

Then back over to the other side of the island for some boats. I really like this green boat that’s been anchored out in Penn Cove for over a month. What a wonderful place to swing on a hook.

The tide was way out this morning and the Coupeville Wharf was standing tall. I’m always amazed that there is enough water under the dock for the big sailboats to dock without hitting bottom

And last but not least, “Boats Deer Bird Water”! I don’t know what this deer was looking for out there but it went out a ways and looked like it was getting his feet stuck to in the muddy bottom but it got back to shore just fine.

I hope you enjoyed that little walk and will come back tomorrow. Enjoy the great month ahead.
